Introduction

Ayat 6 of Surah Al-Kafirun (لكم دينكم ولي دين), translated by Saheeh International as “for you is your religion, and for me is my religion”, is now often cited by many people as a basis for tolerance in Islam. Meaning, according to them, to show the respect and peace between Muslims and persons of other faiths. However, did the mufassirin understand this particular ayat to mean tolerance?
